DAVID T. CARTER is regarded by many people as one of the pioneers of the modern day Americana genre. Perceived as an artist “before his time” he started his original Americana band Trailer Park Rangers in San Francisco in 1991.
As a 4th generation bandleader from NSW Australia in 1991, the term Americana had yet to be coined David recalls, “It was odd that this kind of music that was alien to so many Americans at that time and there I was a new alien at the same time handing it back”. After later moving north and finding his home in Sonoma County, he was Nominated as Best Americana Artist for Four Years and continued to thrive among this American landscape. He created a celebration of music spun from different creeds and cultures that exploded into one another and defined to him what he thought America really meant more than any political resolution.
“This is the true definition and celebration of freedom to me in America, granted, the ‘language of politics’ is necessary but awfully boring and rigid with it’s expression and often trapped in litigation”.
“American roots music is ‘porch music’ – it’s created by working class people and enjoyed by people throughout the entire planet. It’s easy to enjoy and play, I think the real beauty and essence of America is in its music but then again what else am I supposed to say, I’m a musician.”
“I’m a self educated writer who has lived and worked alongside people of different races. All of us exist under whichever folklore it happens to be. I’ve worked in mainly blue collar worlds, sometimes white. I sing to them at night, work with them by day and in my journey wherever I am, I find all of us to be injured in some way, humanity is imperfect. With this in mind, I celebrate our faults and try to use language as a means to intrigue and entice the listener as well as myself – to reveal in many ways, the cards life can deal and put them in a place where we can find that ever evasive hope.”
As of January 2015, for the first time since he was 16, he is taking a break from live performance.
